North Sumatra Police spokesman Adj. Sr. Comr. MP Nainggolan said apart from the dead victims, 48 people sustained major injuries and 90 others suffered minor injuries. He said material losses reached Rp 335 million (US$33,500).
He said according to the police report, the high number of the traffic accident victims was in line with the high number of traffic offenses.
He said that as of Thursday the police had recorded a total of 17,533 traffic offenses committed by road users, where 14,472 of which were given tickets.
He said the reports were part of the Patuh Toba police operation since July 4 to 17 that aimed at raising people's awareness on the street. (hrl/dic)
