The Aceh provincial government plans to allot Rp 64
he Aceh provincial government plans to allot Rp 64.96 billion (US$6.5 million) as an emergency response fund to restore damaged buildings and public infrastructure in Bener Meriah and Aceh Tengah regencies after the July 7 earthquake.
At least 35 people died and more than 4,300 buildings were damaged in the earthquake, which measured 6.1 on the Richter scale.
Governor Zaini Abdullah said on Thursday that he would directly monitor the restoration process, which included places of worship, schools, clinics and other facilities.
"For that purpose, I will do my office work from Aceh Tengah from Monday," he said as quoted by kompas.com.
He added that the administration would work hand-in-hand with the Aceh Disaster Mitigation Agency in organizing restoration work given the fact that it was only the agency that had been authorized to distribute the fund.
However, the governor acknowledged that the provincial administration had not yet calculated the total amount of losses in both regencies.
"We are still estimating the damage and will announce the result as soon as possible," he said.
According to the agency, the number of evacuees has reached 48,563 people in Aceh Tengah and 2,265 people in Bener Meriah. (fan/dic)
