Batam immigration on lookout for fugitive inmates

The Batam Immigration Office is ready to help the local police by keeping an eye out for eight escaped prisoners at Batam Port.

"We've received a request from the police. We will block any attempt by the fugitive inmates to flee overseas," Batam Immigration Office head Rafli said in Batam on Tuesday as quoted by Antara news agency.

Rafli said he had instructed his subordinates to display pictures of the fugitive inmates at all official gates on Batam Island. "The photos are expected to help officers to be on alert," he said.

However, the immigration office can only keep an eye on official exit points on the island. There are more than 100 community ports here, he said.

Meanwhile, Riau Islands Police are still looking for the eight inmates, who broke out of the Batam penitentiary on Wednesday. The jailbreak was also being investigated, said the director of the local police's narcotics detectives unit, Sr. Comr. Agus Rohmat.(apt)
