Garuda, Mandala open new routes

N

ational flag carrier Garuda Indonesia and privately owned Tigerair Mandala recently opened new Jakarta-Tanjung Pinang and Surabaya-Bangkok routes, respectively.

Garuda vice president of communications Pujobroto said the airline would fly to Tanjung Pinang'€™s Raja Haji Fisabilillah Airport once a day with a Boeing B737-500 plane with a capacity of 96 passengers.

'€œThis will make trips easier for passengers between the two cities, and also stimulate tourism growth and investment in Tanjung Pinang,'€ Pujobroto said.

Meanwhile, Mandala decided to link the country'€™s second-largest city, Surabaya, and Bangkok to take advantage of the increase in air passenger traffic between Surabaya and the Thai capital.

Quoting the East Java branch of the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), public relations manager Lucas Suryananta said the number of foreign tourist arrivals at the city'€™s Juanda International Airport had risen by 15.73 percent in the first four months of the year to 70,374.

'€œFrom the data, Thais are among the largest contributors, beside Malaysians, Singaporeans and Chinese. We see this as a good opportunity to spur tourism growth as well as to better serve our customers,'€ Lucas said.
