Job seekers flock Depok police office to apply for letters of good conduct

Hundreds of job seekers packed the Depok Police office on Friday to apply for a letter of good conduct as a prerequisite to register for the nationwide civil servant selection slated for Sept. 1.

Wike Lusiana, 26, a resident of Kepala Dua, Cimanggis district, Depok, said that she had been queuing for three hours from 8:30 a.m. to apply for the letter.

'€œSome say that we can receive the letter the day we apply. However, many people have come all at once, the officer told me that I would have to wait for four days for the letter,'€ Wike told The Jakarta Post in Depok.

Wike, who has been working at a minimarket in Tanjung Barat, South Jakarta for three years, said that she wanted to apply for a civil servant'€™s job because she wanted to make a better life.

'€œBecoming a civil servant is good because when we have retired we will receive a pension from the government every month,'€ said Wike who graduated from the Jakarta State Polytechnic.

Depok police spokesman Adj. Sr. Comr. Syah Johan said that people had started coming for letters of good conduct on Monday and their number had continued to grow as the day for civil servant registration drew closer.

Syah said that his office issued around 40 letters of good conduct per day on regular days. He added that with the civil servant selection approaching his office had to issue up to 200 letters per day. (hrl)
