close friend of Benny Handoko, known for his critical tweets, has revealedthat the Twitter celebrity has been detained for defamation. Susy Rizky, a politicianwith the Independent People's Union Party (SRI), said Benny had informed her ofhis predicament himself.
'Benny has been detained at Cipinang prison. May he be strong,' Suzy told The Jakarta Post on Thursday.
Benny, who has been tweeting under the name Benhan, has 48,000 followers. He was reported to the police for defamation by former lawmaker Misbakhun after Benny referred to Misbakhun as a 'robber' on his tweets about the Bank Century bailout.
Misbakhun, who was implicated in a bogus letter-of-credit case concerning Bank Century but eventually declared not guilty by the Supreme Court, was offended by Benny's remark. He asked Benny to retract his statement and apologize, but Benny refused to do so.
