our-wheeled vehicles are forbidden from crossing the Kapuas I Bridge in Pontinanak City, West Kalimantan, following damage to the pillars of the bridge. The damage was discovered after two boats carrying heavy loads crashed into the pillars and caused cracks. The authority has closed the bridge for four-wheeled vehicles, but it still allows motorcycles to cross the bridge.
West Kalimantan Deputy Govenor Christiandy Sanjaya said that he had suggested that the governor completely shut down the bridge during the repair work for the sake of the motorists' safety. Due to the repair work, the traffic has been diverted to the Kapuas II Bridge.
On Aug. 30, a boat carrying around 8-tons of bauxite hit the main pillar at around 10:20 p.m. This incident had forced the authority to completely close the Kapuas I Bridge to motorists. On Sept. 3, a tugboat carrying palm oil crashed into one of the bridge's pillars.
The Kapuas I Bridge links South Pontianak district to East Pontianak as well as Pontianak city center to other regencies/cities in the province.
The bridge, worth Rp 6.06 billion (US$522,000), was built in 1980 and inaugurated by late President Soeharto in 1982. The bridge is 420-meter long and 6-meter wide.
