Guess what?: Film industry cannot be limited to Jakarta

F

ilm director and producer Mira Lesmana is concerned about Indonesia'€™s film industry, which she says is dominated by movies depicting Jakarta. She is worried that the situation will limit the younger generation'€™s point of reference.

'€œAt present, 80 percent of Indonesian movies are about Java and Jakarta in particular. The diversity of Indonesia is completely ignored,'€ she said recently as quoted by kompas.com in an event discussing the Makassar SEAScreen Academy.

The Makassar SEAScreen Academy is a film workshop for young filmmakers from eastern Indonesia. The workshop, initiated by Riri Riza, will be held for the second time on Oct. 4 to 8 in Makassar, South Sulawesi. Mira is the principal of the academy.

'€œFor our film industry, eastern Indonesia is an obscure place. The industry is restricted to Jakarta while eastern Indonesia has so many stories that can be portrayed in movies,'€ she said.
