43-year-old British woman, Andrea Ruth Waldeck, will likely face the death penalty for her alleged involvement in the trafficking of more than 1,4 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine, according to a prosecutor when indicting the defendant at Surabaya District Court on Monday.
Prosecutor Deddy Agus Oktavianto said the defendant had violated articles 114 and 112 of the 2009 Narcotics Law, which carries a possible death sentence.
'The defendant carried 1472.32 grams of crystal meth worth US$5,000. The defendant managed to escape from the security check at Juanda Airport [in Surabaya] before she was caught by officers of the National Narcotics Agency [BNN] at a hotel,' Deddy told The Jakarta Post on Tuesday.
Waldeck was arrested on April 29 after she called her friend in China and demanded she send someone to get the drugs.
Officers found two packages of drugs inside a black plastic bag, which was stuffed under Waldeck's underwear.
'Other packages were hidden in her panties, while one was hidden under her jumper,' Deddy added.
