RI strikes gold in weightlifting

Indonesia is the overall winner in the weightlifting competition at the 3rd Islamic Solidarity Games (ISG) after sweeping 6 out of a possible 15 gold medals in the event.

Indonesian lifters took the gold medals in the women'€™s 48, 53, 58 and 63 kilogram (kg) events as well as the men'€™s 62 and 69 kg events.

Sri Wahyuni Agustiani secured the first gold medal in the 48 kg event, followed by Citra Febrianti in the 53 kg, Okta Dwi Paramita in the 58 kg and Sinta Darmariani in the 63 kg.

In the men'€™s events the gold medal went to local favorite Eko Yuli Irawan in the 62 kg and Deni in the 69 kg events.

Two silver medals were taken by women lifters Syarah Anggraini in the 53 kg and Siti Sarah in the 69 kg while bronze medals went to M. Purkon in the 65 kg and Dwi Atika Sari in the 63 kg.

Eko, who brought home a bronze medal from the 2012 London Olympics, said the ISG was a warm-up event for the upcoming SEA Games in Myanmar in December and preparation for the Rio Olympics in 2016.

'€œMy target is the Olympic gold. After that I may continue my education,'€ said the 24-year-old Eko, who finished his formal education via Kejar Paket C, an equivalent to senior high school education.

He expected the government would give him and other medalists a bonus after the ISG. '€œThere'€™s been no commitment from the government as to whether or not we will get a bonus after this event.'€

Separately on Saturday, wushu athletes Lindswell, Juwita Niza Wasni and Fredy took three more gold medals for Indonesia.

Lindswell won the gold medal in the women'€™s tai chi with a total of 9.69, slightly above Malaysia'€™s Chanm Lu Yi who scored 9.54 and took silver, while Iran'€™s Hamideh Barkhor secured bronze with a total of 9.30.

Juwita seized another gold medal in the women'€™s nanquan (Chinese martial arts) event with a total of 9.63, besting compatriot Ivana Ardelia Irmanto who grabbed silver with 9.34, while Egypt'€™s Angi Hany Mostafa Kamal Alkhatib took bronze with a score of 9.13, Antara news agency reported.

Earlier, Fredy had taken gold in the men'€™s tai chi event with a total of 9.61, surpassing compatriot Marthen Mardan Tangdilallo, who took silver with 9.60 points.

Egypt'€™s wushu athlete Mohamed Nagi Ali Mohamed Ghanem grabbed bronze with a total score of 9.50.

'€œWinning a gold medal in the ISG is OK, but my main target is a gold medal in the SEA Games,'€ said Fredy, who also won gold at the 2011 SEA Games in Palembang, South Sumatra.
