Officer gets life sentence for wife'€™s murder

T

heSupreme Court has sentenced former Riau Islands Police officer Adj. Sr. Comr.Mindo Tampubolon to life in prison for masterminding the murder of his wife,Putri Mega Umboh, daughter of former Pekanbaru Police chief Sr. Comr. JamesUmboh.

Previously, Mindo was declared not guilty by a panel of judges at the Batam District Court in the Riau Islands and the Riau High Court.

Batam district court head Jack Johannes Octavianus said the Supreme Court'€™s verdict was announced on Wednesday. Jack said that Mindo had 90 days to file a case review with the Supreme Court if he had new evidence.

Putri was found dead with seven wounds in the Telaga Punggur Forest in Batam in June 2011. The police arrested Putri'€™s maid, Rosma and Rosma'€™s boyfriend, Gugun Gunawan aka Ujang for killing Putri.

During questioning, Ujang and Rosma revealed that Mindo had ordered them to carry out the murder. They also said Mindo was not only the mastermind behind the killing but that he disposed of his wife's body in the nearest jungle. Mindo denied the allegations, arguing that he was at his office when the murder occurred.

Meanwhile, Ujang and Rosma'€™s lawyer, Juhrin Pasaribu,  welcomed the verdict.

'€œWe are quite pleased to hear the verdict because before this, the judges [at the Batam District Court and the Riau High Court]  never considered Ujang'€™s and Rosma'€™s testimony,'€ said Juhrin. In the case, Ujang and Rosma were sentenced to 20 and 15 years'€™ imprisonment, respectively.
