hina has said wider prosperity and partnership in the Asia-Pacific region will become an underlying tenet in mapping out the economic agenda when it chairs the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) in 2014.

The statement was made by Zhao Huimin, director general of the Foreign Affairs Office of the People'€™s Government of Beijing Municipality, on the sidelines of the 2013 APEC Summit in Nusa Dua, Bali, which ended on Tuesday.

Huimin and his colleague, Xia Jinggie, a counselor at the International Economic Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People'€™s Republic of China, refused to elaborate on China'€™s 2014 economic agenda.

Chinese President Xi Jinping said in his keynote speech during the APEC CEO Summit on Monday, that China was committed to increasing reform and openness in all aspects.

This included a more proactive strategy for strengthening the balance of international trade; a legal environment that allowed foreign companies to operated in China; planning of partnerships; and global and regional openness.

Jinping made the statement in the midst of ongoing economic downturn in his country. China'€™s growth slowed to 7.6 percent in the first half of this year, down from 7.8 percent last year and 9.3 percent in 2011.

Despite the slowing economy, Jinping said China'€™s economic growth was "as it should be". '€œChina cannot grow if it is isolated in the Asia-Pacific, and the region cannot be prosperous without China,'€ he said. (ebf)
