ATM theft plan goes up in smoke

he attempted robbery of a bank automated teller machine(ATM) at a convenience store on Jl. Sungai Brantas in Cilincing, North Jakarta,has led to the incineration of Rp 175 million (US$15,225) worth of banknotesinside the cash box after the perpetrators tried to open it using anoxyacetylene torch.

Cilincing precinct police chief Comr. Nahrowi said on Thursday that the culprits were believed to have entered the store at 3 a.m. on Thursday and fled the scene after they were overwhelmed by smoke. 

'€œThey left the ATM unopened. The money inside had been burned when the police opened it,'€ he said.

The robbers left two small gas canisters at the scene.

The morning shift workers arriving at the convenience store called the fire department after they saw thick smoke emanating from the building.

Nahrowi said the police were questioning two workers at the convenience store and the owner of the neighboring building as witnesses in the case.
