Official accused of accepting gratuities

L

aw and Human Rights Minister Amir Syamsuddin has orderedthe director of civil affairs at the ministry, Lilik Sri Haryanto, to reportthe receipt of cash gratuities to the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK).

'€œ[I] Have ordered Lilik to file a report to the KPK,'€ Amir said in his statement on Wednesday.

Last week, the ministry'€™s regional inspector and auditors looked into a bribery report received by Deputy Minister Denny Indrayana, which alleged that bribery was involved in the process of issuing licenses for notaries in some areas in the country.

Notary licenses are issued by the Civil Affairs Directorate, which is under the Ministry'€™s General Legal Administration Directorate.

The team found that a staffer within the directorate had received Rp 95 million (US$ 8,500) in cash on behalf of Lilik.

Lilik confirmed the cash payment.

Amir said the investigating team found indications of violations during the process.

'€œI have heard it is indeed expensive for a notary to be certified in South Jakarta. It could cost millions of rupiah,'€ Denny said.

'€œWe must stop such illegal practices. We support any legal action against the culprits. Anyone who knows about such practices, please report them to us,'€ he added.
