n official with the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) in NorthSulawesi has said Manado is in no danger from any tsunami that might betriggered in the wake of a powerful earthquake in the Philippines.
"Certainly, there was an official statement from the National Disaster Management Agency about Manado facing a tsunami threat, but the city is safe," local BNPB spokesman Muardi Rahmola said on Tuesday as quoted by Antara news wire.
He said a tsunami could have been triggered by the 7.2 magnitude earthquake that killed at least 20 people in Central Philippines on Tuesday, but it would not reach the city of Manado.
"When a powerful earthquake triggered a massive tsunami in Japan in 2011, Manado and Bitung were unaffected and so it would be best for people to remain calm and carry out their daily activities as usual," he added.(dic)
