The four dead men were Hafat, 40, Heri Setiawan, 33, Ikno Riyansah, 25, and Wahyudin, 28. The police believed the four were members of the notorious Ah Fatt gang that has been targeting the residences of state officials and prominent figures.
M. Zaenal, head of protection and placement of Indonesian migrant workers at the NTB Manpower and Transmigration Agency, confirmed the four were not migrant workers, but were Sumbawa residents who had been staying in Batam for some time.
Separately, NTB Deputy Governor H. Muhammad Amin said the administration had sent letters to Indonesian Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa and the Indonesian Embassy in Malaysia, demanding the Indonesian government conduct a thorough investigation into the shootings.
