Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW) has slammed the Yogyakarta police for their seeming inability to probe graft cases.
"The Yogyakarta police have failed to meet the target, set by the National Police chief, that the provincial police should be able to investigate at least five graft cases a year," Emerson Yuntho of the ICW said on Wednesday.
Therefore, he went on, ICW recommended that the newly sworn-in National Police chief Gen. Sutarman take firm action against the regional police chief who has been proven to lack a commitment to fighting graft.
ICW also announced that to date the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) had supervised the graft investigations currently conducted by the Yogyakarta police and the prosecutors' office.
According to ICW, at least10 graft cases are currently being investigated by the Bantul Police office and the Yogyakarta Prosecutors' office.
Emerson said ICW and the Yogyakarta Anti Corruption Network would monitor the running of the investigations and promised that they would report directly to the KPK if misconduct was detected during the investigations.
Commenting on this Yogyakarta Police's anti corruption desk head Comr. Aap Sinwan Yasin said he welcomed the assessment but said that the he did not understand the parameters of the assessment.
"We welcome any opinion but to be frank I don't understand the parameters used in the assessment," he said.
He said the Yogyakarta police were investigating graft cases.(dic)
