esidents of threedistricts'€“ Padang Ulak Tanding, Bindu Riang and Kelingi '€“ in Rejang Lebongregency, Bengkulu, blocked the Trans Sumatra route linking the province andSouth Sumatra in protest at the death of two villagers.

The protesters accused police of having tortured the two men, Fajar, 34, and Aswan, 26, to death after they were arrested for allegedly robbing a bank in Curup city.

Rejang Lebong police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Edi Sudarsono denied the allegations, saying that the two men were killed after being beaten by villagers.

'€œWhen we arrived at the crime scene, the two men were severely beaten,'€ said Edi, adding that the robbers were later rushed to Bhayangkara hospital, but they died after being admitted.

The villagers staged their protest for a few hours and then agreed to unblock the route after negotiations with personnel from the Military Police.
