he Central Java administration is now mulling punishment for individuals that give money to street children and beggars as part of efforts to curb social problems and uphold public order.
'Fines will be for both the givers and receivers and will vary from Rp 500,000 [US$41.26] to Rp 1 million,' Hengky from the Central Java administration said on Friday.
He explained that the administration was planning to rehabilitate street children and beggars before sending them back to their respective villages.
According to the administration, the number of street children and beggars in Semarang has risen from 275 last year to 350 people this year. The Central Java administration has earmarked Rp 800 million to fund the "street-cleaning" operation (dic)
