elati reservoir in Tanah Abang, Central Jakarta, was still quiet on Tuesday even though the huge World Bank (WB) dredging project had begun a week ago.
Besides a smattering of concrete posts on the reservoir's banks, only a couple of grey pontoons, a green excavator and some portable storage were visible on the site on Jl. Teluk Betung.
'This morning, workers assembled the pontoons, but they stopped because the excavator's safety equipment had not arrived,' Basirun, a worker, said on Tuesday.
'Once the excavator is ready to roll, I will dig the holes for the concrete posts to be installed. After that, we will begin dredging the reservoir,' he said.
The dredging project was initiated in 2008 under the name the Jakarta Emergency Dredging Initiative (JEDI). The project is now known as the Jakarta Urgent Flood Mitigation Project (JUFMP) and allow the city administration and the Public Works Ministry to dredge 11 rivers and two dams with US$150 million in loans from the WB.
The first dredging package was priced at Rp 284 billion (US$23.42 million). It comprised Ciliwung River, Gunung Sahari drain, Melati reservoir, Gresik waterway and Cideng Hulu waterway.
