Model gets six months on probation

A

panel of judges at the West Jakarta District Court has sentenced 26-year-old model Novi Amalia to six months, to be served on probation for a year, for hitting seven pedestrians while driving under the influence of drugs in 2012.

Novi, a photo model for an adult magazine thanked the judges for not requiring her to serve the sentence in prison. '€œI accept the court'€™s verdict in accordance with the principles of justice,'€ she said when asked to respond to the judges'€™ decision during the court session here on Tuesday.

She promised to behave well and would not be driving during her probation. '€œI will not be driving myself and I will hire a driver to get about.'€

Rendy Anggara Putra, Novi'€™s lawyer in the case, said he and his client were satisfied with the court verdict. He said that if his client had been required to serve the sentence in jail it would have had a negative impact on her psychiatric condition.

Novi faces six months in jail if she commits a similar violation during the one-year probation. '€œIf she is jailed it would worsen her psychiatric condition; but the court has given my client justice,'€ he said.

Prosecutors previously sought seven months in jail for Novi because of her incapacitated state when she hit seven people.

Novi was arrested after she hit seven pedestrians with her Honda Jazz car on Jl. Gajah Mada on Oct. 11, 2012.

Rendy previously said his client was suffering depression after she was prosecuted. While she was undergoing drug dependency treatment at a hospital in the city she appeared nude in public in the Mampang area and self-harmed with broken glass in a reported suicide attempt.
