undreds of local residents in South Sumatra received on Monday a total of Rp 150 billion (US$12.51 million) in compensation for their plots of land, which will be used for a proposed toll road in the province.
The compensation payments were made for land that will cover the first 7-kilometer section of the toll road, linking South Sumatra's provincial capital of Palembang with Indralaya, the seat of the Ogan Ilir regency.
Two other sections are 5 km and 10 km, respectively.
One hundred twenty-three residents were paid compensation on Monday, while another 67 recipients have yet to be paid their compensation for the first section.
'We aim to pay compensation for the two other sections later this year. The value of the land is based on agreements with the residents,' the head of the Public Works Ministry's National Highway Construction Agency (BBPJN) III in Palembang, Tasripin Sartiono, said after the compensation payments were handed out in Indralaya on Monday.
He added that there were no significant problems in negotiating the compensation with the locals because the land plots had not been used for settlements.
The plots of land in sector 1 are dormant plots in a swampy area in Ibul 1and Ibul 3 in Muara Baru villages in Pemulutan district, Ogan Ilir.
South Sumatra Governo Alex Noerdin said the construction of the toll road was vital as the Palembang-Indralaya highway was too narrow and prone to traffic jams due to the high number of vehicles using the route.
The Palembang-Indralaya toll road is part of the 2,017.2-km Trans-Sumatra toll road, which will comprise 24 sections including Medan-Binjai, Pekanbaru-Kandis-Dumai, Palembang-Indralaya and Bakauheni-Terbanggi Besar. (*****)
