The National Police (Polri) will deploy 3,500 personnel to help with disaster mitigation efforts in various parts of the country.

'€œOverall, around 3,500 Polri and Mobile Brigade (Brimob) personnel will be deployed,'€ said National Police chief Gen. Sutarman in a statement read out by security maintenance chief Comr. Gen. Badrodin Haiti at a disaster mitigation meeting at the Mobile Brigade'€™s (Brimob) headquarters in Kelapa Dua, Depok, on Wednesday.

Sutarman said the personnel would be deployed to areas hit by natural disasters, such the eruptions of Mount Sinabung in Karo regency, North Sumatra, and flooding in Jakarta, North Sulawesi, West Java and many other areas.

He said personnel would be deployed until the end of March. '€œBased on data from the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency [BMKG], we'€™ve prepared personnel for operations that will likely last until March. We'€™ve checked their readiness to handle long-term operations,'€ said Sutarman.

He said the police could add more personnel based on requests from regional police offices across the country. '€œWe can add more personnel and equipment if needed,'€ he went on.

Sutarman said the first batch comprising 300 personnel would be deployed to help the Jakarta Police handle floods in Jakarta and its surrounding areas.

According to official data, 693 natural disasters occurred throughout 2013, including 262 landslides, 95 flash floods, 44 tidal floods, eruptions of one volcano, 94 whirlwinds and 171 other disasters. There were also 424 fires and 24 other non-natural disasters last year. (ebf)
