UK'€™s Hague talks corruption with Jokowi William Hague: (AFP) (AFP)

William Hague: (AFP)

UK Foreign Secretary William Hague paid a visit to City Hall in Jakarta on Tuesday and discussed various issues related to good governance with Governor Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo, who is being touted as a presidential candidate.

Talking to reporters after the meeting, Hague said that he and Jokowi had shared their experiences on fighting corruption.

'€œWe are doing work to support [efforts] to combat corruption and promote transparency. All countries have a great deal to learn from each other. In the UK, we are doing a lot of work on open government, publishing information ['€¦] It'€™s been fascinating to discuss this with the governor,'€ Hague said.

'€œIt'€™s been good to compare our experiences and to hear about a huge increase in revenue in Jakarta from [applying] e-government and again this is similar to what we'€™re doing in the UK,'€ he said, stating that the meeting had been '€œuseful and productive'€.

Jokowi shared the sentiment, saying he wanted to ensure bureaucratic efficiency in Jakarta, such as through online tax, an e-catalog and e-budgeting.

Hague is slated to meet his Indonesian counterpart, Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa, on Wednesday to discuss bilateral cooperation.

His visit to Indonesia and the Philippines from Jan. 27 to 31, is the latest in an unprecedented round of high-level visits to and from Southeast Asia over the past two years that have revitalized the UK'€™s relationship with the region.

The UK sees Indonesia as the powerhouse economy of Southeast Asia, the third most populous country in the world and the largest Muslim democracy.

Besides bilateral issues, the two ministers will discuss international issues of joint interest, including promoting the UK'€™s Preventing Sexual Violence in Conflict Initiative.

The UK is preparing to host a major conference to increase international momentum on the issue. The conference will bring together governments and representatives from civil society, judiciaries and militaries from around the world. Indonesia and more than 100 other UN member states signed a declaration pledging new global action to end sexual violence in conflict situations on the sidelines of the 68th UN General Assembly in September 2013.

The Declaration of Commitment to End Sexual Violence in Conflict contains a set of practical and political commitments to end the use of rape and sexual violence as weapons to terrorize and destroy communities during conflicts.
