The new European Union Ambassador to Indonesia, Olof Skoog, is currently visiting Ambon and Seram Island to meet and discuss local development and land-use planning with a number of local key stakeholders.
'I really look forward to visiting this historically important region of Indonesia and to learn more about the challenges and opportunities faced by the locals on an everyday basis; be it in terms of land use, economic opportunities, education or health. I will also enjoy seeing the effects of EU-funded projects on the ground,' said the EU ambassador prior to his four-day visit, which began on Tuesday.
Ambassador Skoog first visited a group of mothers in Amaory village, a resettlement village that is home to more than 200 families.
The village has benefited from the support of EU funds channeled through the Aid to Uprooted People program. The program supports healthcare initiatives and sanitary measures in Amaory village and provides economic livelihood activities for locals in the village.
Ambassador Skoog is scheduled to travel to Seram Island to attend a seminar on the 'Collaborative land use planning and sustainable institutional arrangements for strengthening land tenure, forest and community rights in Indonesia (CoLUPSIA)' project.
The local administration and project beneficiaries will participate in the seminar, which will cast light on CoLUPSIA's key achievements.
The EU ambassador will later travel to several project sites to discuss land-use planning, land allocations and traditional land use. (ebf)
