s many as 14,000 members of the Army would be deployedto help fix damaged roads along Java's northern coastal highway (Pantura), ahigh-rank official said on Monday.
'We are here to help the Public Works Ministry. There are around 4,500 soldiers who are qualified to work in road construction, while 9,500 additional soldiers will be dispatched to assist with the work,' said Army chief of staff Gen. Budiman in Semarang, Central Java.
It is expected that the first phase of the work will be completed by the end of February. 'Hopefully the repair would smoothen the traffic along Brebes and Tegal,' Budiman said.
Separately, Semarang Mayor Hendrar Prihadi said that damaged roads in the city were mostly found in coastal areas like Genuk, East Semarang, Pedurungan and North Semarang.
'Residents should be patient because we can only start fixing the damaged roads once the rainy season is over,' Hendrar, adding that the administration had procured Rp 20 billion (US$1.6 million) for the project.
