he Foreign Ministry is in talks with Central Java GovernorGanjar Pranowo on how to secure the release of two migrant workers from CentralJava who are facing death sentences abroad.

Ministry official Tatang Razak said his office was gathering funds so that it could ask the Saudi Arabian government to release Satinah, a migrant worker currently on death row on murder charges.

He said the ministry had so far gathered Rp 12 billion (US$1.03 million) from various sources in order to free Satinah.

The Saudi government has set a fee of Rp 21 billion for the release of Satinah.

'€œSo we need to gather more money to release Satinah,'€ Tatang said on Friday.

Besides the fundraising, he went on, the ministry had also provided lawyers to assist Satinah.

He said President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono had also requested leniency from the family of the victim via the Saudi government.

Similar attempt was also made by Satinah'€™s daughter Nur Afriani, who had sent a letter asking for her mother'€™s life to be spared.

Besides Satinah, the ministry was also involved in another prisoner negotiation with the Saudi government concerning Karni, a migrant worker from Brebes, Central Java, who was sentenced to death for murder.

Karni was proven guilty of murdering his employer'€™s child. The victim'€™s family has insisted on Karni'€™s death execution, closing all doors to negotiations. (dic)
