Bookworm: Riyanni Djangkaru: Traveling through books

Kapanlagi.com

Presenter and environmental activist Riyanni Djangkaru is a travel enthusiast who likes exploring every corner of the archipelago, especially its vast ocean. But, to travel to the past and to places that she may not be able to visit, she relies on books.

For her, books are like time machines that capture places in authors'€™ minds, taking readers into that world.

Riyanni, the founder of diving magazine Divemag Indonesia, was also known as a presenter of an extreme travel TV show, Jejak Petualang (Adventure Trail). Now, apart from becoming the magazine'€™s editor-in-chief, she is also involved in shark conservation campaigns and other green movements.

Riyanni says books have been part of her life since she was a child. She likes to read books while she is on airplanes, during breaks while diving and before she goes to bed.

Besides reading, the dive master also likes to write. Although the idea to create a travel book has crossed her mind, she needs a bigger push to make it materialize.

'€œI'€™m still too lazy to write; I need one determining moment that makes me want to start writing again,'€ she says.

Here are some of Riyanni'€™s most inspiring books:

The Secret
by Rhonda Byrne

The Secret helps me connect things related to power that I don'€™t really understand. We may know that there is the mighty power of God but, before I read The Secret, the explanation of (that power) was dogmatic and not practical.

I have always loved being in the wild, but I never really understood why until I read the explanation in The Secret.

Thanks to this book, too, I could make one of my wishes come true '€” a dream that people said was impossible for me to achieve. But I proved them wrong, and my wish came true '€” establishing a magazine.

Pippi Longstocking
by Astrid Lindgren

This is a book from my childhood, but I still like to read it '€” over and over again. There are some similarities, I think, between Pippi and me. Pippi is forever young, loves freedom and has a unique way of viewing things. There'€™s always been part of Pippi in Riyanni.

Kariage-kun
by Masashi Ueda

Kariage-kun comic books are among the most influential teachers in my life. The stories are sometimes very closely connected to my daily life. Just like Pippi, Kariage also has his own way of seeing and doing things. I love how he likes to laugh at and appreciate small things.
