The Presidential Security Detail (Paspampres) officially got a new group to safeguard former presidents and vice presidents and their families on Monday.
Group D was officiated by Indonesian Military (TNI) Commander Gen. Moeldoko at the Paspampres headquarters in Tanah Abang, Central Jakarta, the TNI Information Center said in a media statement.
Lt. Col. Novi Helmy Prasetya was appointed as the first Group D commander.
Group A is responsible for securing the incumbent president, Group B for the vice president and Group C for visiting heads of state or heads of government.
Meanwhile, the newly established training detachment will oversee the training and capabilities development of Paspampres personnel under the direct command of the Paspampres commander.
Previously, the tasks were carried out by Group C.
Moeldoko said the new group was part of structural strengthening measures for Paspampres units, which have to comply with international VVIP security standards.
'We have secured former presidents and vice presidents although without fixed organization. After a series of evaluation, we found the need to establish a specialized unit to carry out the duties,' he was quoted as saying by Antara news agency.
'Group D has 287 personnel and each subject [former president or vice president] will be assigned a team of 30 Paspampres personnel.'
However, Moeldoko said a subject might not require the full team all the time.
'We will match the security level with their needs,' he said. (nvn)
