ocal authorities closed public access to Mt. Slametthrough the Bambangan shelter in Kutabawa village, Purbalingga, Central Java,as of Monday due to increased volcanic activity.
Purbalingga Art, Culture and Sports Agency spokesman Prayitno said on Tuesday his office had coordinated with the Semarang Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) to monitor the status of Mt. Slamet.
'For safety purposes, Mt. Slamet has been closed to trekkers,' said Prayitno as quoted by tribunnews.com.
According to Bambangan shelter data, at least 21 trekkers left for the peak of the mountain on Monday morning. Ten of them are from Jakarta, nine from West Java and two from Tegal.
