he Malang Police have named legislative candidate Mohammad Syamsul Arifin with the Hanura Party as a suspect for holding a campaign event before the official campaign period.
'We have questioned him as suspect today,' Malang Police's criminal unit head Adj. Comr. Aldy Sulaeman said on Friday as quoted by tempo.co.
He said he had received a report from the Malang Election Supervisory Committee (Panwaslu) that Syamsul had held a campaign event in which he had people over to his house and distributed packages of staple foods and encouraged them to vote for him in the April 9 election.
Head of Panwaslu Malang branch George Da Silva acknowledged that this was the first electoral crime case handled by the police in the region.
Commenting on the case, head of Hanura Party Malang branch Adilla Aziz said the party wouldn't interfere with the legal process.
'We expect that he will be declared innocent in this case,' she said. (idb/dic)
