n integrity pact recently signed by public and religious figures in West Manggarai regency requires all legislative candidates elected in the April 9 legislative election to avoid getting involved in arranging projects, known as 'project mafia', in the regency.
'After a series of debates, we have agreed to the pact,' Hipolitus Mawar, director of the West Manggarai Democracy School, one of the signatories of the pact, said on Monday.
He said that the idea of establishing such an integrity pact was born as a result of past experiences in the West Manggarai Legislative Council (DPRD). Councilors had failed to closely monitor the budgeting process within the regency's legislative council.
'They [DPRD members] were allegedly involved in the arrangement of projects in the regency. Hopefully, with the signing of the pact, we will have credible councilors as a result of the April 9 election,' Hipolitus said. ' JP/Markus Makur
