KPK intends to take over '€œVideotron'€ graft case from prosecutors

T

he Corruption Eradication Commission(KPK) has announced its intention to take over a graft case involving the sonof leading member of the Democratic Party from the Attorney General'€™s Office(AGO).

The decision was made following review over the case that centered on the procurement of jumbotrons for multimedia digital advertisements at the Cooperatives and Small and Medium Enterprises Ministry, which is led by Syarifuddin Hasan.

Syarief'€™s son, Riefan Avran, runs the company that won the Rp 23 billion (US$1.9 million) project tender at the Ministry.

Rights activists supported the idea, saying the AGO had been very slow in handling the investigation.

"The KPK is allowed to take over a case if it perceives that either the police or the prosecutors are facing difficulties in handling the investigation of a graft case,'€ KPK spokesman Johand Budi said.

So far, the prosecutors have named three suspects in the case: Hasnawi Bachtiar, an official at the ministry; Kasiyadi, a member of the procurement committee at the ministry; and Hendra Saputra, an office boy at PT Imaje Media, who was listed as a company executive director.

On Dec. 24, 2013, the prosecutor'€™s office questioned Riefan as a witness in the case, despite calls mounting for prosecutors to name him a suspect. Activists also urge the prosecutor's office to grill Syarief, whose testimony they claim important to solve the case.(dic)
