he government says that it is currently waiting to seal a deal with foreign investors who have shown interest in buying ailing state-run carrier PT Merpati Nusantara Airlines (Merpati).
"I have met with Russian and Chinese investors. They want to collaborate with Merpati. [...] The model of collaboration is up to them," State-Owned Ministry deputy for restructuring and strategic planning Wahyu Hidayat said in Jakarta on Thursday as quoted by kompas.com.
One of the investors was Xi'an Aircraft Industrial Corporation, a Chinese-government-run firm.
He said the government had yet to decide which investor would collaborate with Merpati.
"Our position is clear that we are not going to inject funds into the airline," he added.
Xi'an was reported to send an official letter of interest to the ministry, kompas.com reported.
Previously, Minister Dahlan Iskan said the ministry would further discuss the possibility of working with Russian aircraft-maker Sukhoi in the near future. (nfo)
