Issue of the day: Jokowi urged to step down

strong>April 7, Online

The Gerindra Party has demanded that Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo immediately step down as Jakarta governor.

'€œAll this time, Pak Jokowi has been busy handling election campaign activities. Policy implementation has continued to run, but it has been sluggish whereas in Jakarta, policy implementation is not allowed to be delayed even for one hour,'€ said Mohamad Sanusi, head of the Gerindra faction at the Jakarta Legislative Council (DPRD), in Jakarta on Monday as quoted by kompas.com.

He said Jokowi no longer concentrated on his responsibilities as Jakarta governor. Even if he took leave of absence, he added, Jokowi could not delegate his authority to his deputy, Basuki '€œAhok'€ Tjahaja Purnama. As an acting governor, Ahok could not make decisions on strategic policies.

Your comments:

Political positions are not like private contract jobs. You are elected and you are free to decide if you want to finish your term or resign. It'€™s not a big deal.

Obama was a first-time senator before becoming president of the United States, he'€™s done pretty well.

I am sure Jokowi will do it anyway very soon and then Gerindra will have no more reason to complain.

I am impressed with the progress of democracy. With Jokowi I see Indonesia is on the right path. This progress I hope will benefit Malaysia as well.

Our political system is nothing vibrant like yours. I hope your economic progress will soon move in tandem with this political vibrancy.

Jokowi claims to oppose corruption now appear increasingly absurd. His public image of humility is now a farce as he cannot even commit to one task. Jokowi clearly wants whatever he can get away with, and forget about any '€œsocial contract'€ with constituents.

Just who is keeping this tsunami of Jokowi publicity going? Who is paying the vast array of publicists, journalists, party members, NGOs, union apparatus and assorted other hangers-on?  We can only pray that the General Elections Commission (KPU) hasn'€™t been contaminated.

And so Ahok and the rest of the city administration are left to shoulder the burden of the work and all the real responsibility, while Jokowi can do as he pleases like some feudal lord? If this is the so-called '€œleadership'€ example to Indonesians, then the consequences will be very dire if left unchecked.

Why such hysterical ad hominem reaction when someone scrutinizes Jokowi?   What'€™s going on?

Who do actually believe the garbage espoused by the likes of Mohamad Sanusi and others? For them, qualifications, demonstrable deeds, political platforms and vision are irrelevant.

I hope people can make a decision based on facts and issues relevant to our well-being, there are many whose ignorant biases are simply too powerful to ignore. From character, substance to effectiveness, especially in the face of a stop-everything by opposition, a superior presidential candidate like Jokowi has done Indonesia very proud.

I don'€™t agree with Jokowi'€™s presidential nomination because he has only been governor for less than two years, with three more to go. It is better for him to finish his job in Jakarta.
