The NasDem Party has officially announced its support of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P)'s presidential hopeful, Jakarta Governor Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo, for the July 9 presidential election.
'We have agreed to tighten the line to support a presidential candidate from the PDI-P,' NasDem chairman Surya Paloh said on Saturday, as quoted by Antara news agency.
In a press conference that was attended by Jokowi and PDI-P secretary general Tjahjo Kumolo, Surya said that his party decided to establish a coalition with the PDI-P due to similar platforms of change and restoration for a better Indonesia.
'Our discussion mainly focused on our willingness to understand the visions and missions of the PDI-P and NasDem,' said Surya.
Based on the results of several quick counts after the April 9 legislative election, the PDI-P looks to have garnered between 18.6 percent and 19.2 percent while NasDem achieved between 6.6 percent and 6.7 percent of the total votes. With NasDem support, the PDI-P will slightly surpass the presidential threshold of 25 percent, with a joint total of 25.2 to 25.9 percent.
A party or a coalition of parties must hold at least 25 percent of the total votes or have 20 percent of the total seats at the House of Representatives to nominate presidential and vice presidential candidates.
Surya reaffirmed his full support of the former Surakarta mayor by stating that the PDI-P and NasDem currently had the same presidential candidate.
'NasDem gives its full support, with joy and a big heart; the PDI-P presidential candidate is also the candidate of NasDem,' he said.
However, he said that in the meeting, the parties did not discuss any deals relating to ministerial posts.
He added that he would further discuss the parties' visions and missions when he met with PDI-P chairwoman Megawati Soekarnoputri.
'The important thing is we support Jokowi, and we can talk about the vision and mission with Megawati Soekarnoputri [later],' he said. (idb/nvn)
