ormer Upstream Oil and Gas Regulatory Special Task Force (SKKMigas) chief Rudi Rubiandini maintained that it was members of the House of Representatives who had requested kickbacks.
Rudi said in his defense statement read during his graft trial session on Tuesday that a number of lawmakers made veiled threats, demanding the kickbacks.
'The lawmakers said that we needed to stick to the old habit; Idul Fitri was fast approaching but they hadn't received anything from SKKMigas,' Rudi said, quoting some of the lawmakers.
Rudi said he had paid the kickbacks out of fear.
In his defense statement Rudi, however, denied any wrongdoings and shifted the blame on to his golf instructor Deviardi.
'I never asked anybody anything because of my position,' he said.
KPK prosecutors accused Rudi of being involved in more than six instances of illicit practices and allegedly accepting a total of US$2.42 million in kickbacks.
Among the allegations include the S$200,000 ($157,000) and $900,000 bribes from the president of Singapore-based oil trading firm Kernel Oil, Widodo Ratanachaithong, through Simon Gunawan Tanjaya, an executive at the firm.
