JIS stops ministry staff from entering school

T

hree members of a monitoring team from the directorate general of informal and non-formal early childhood education (PAUDNI) at the Education and Culture Ministry were not allowed to enter Jakarta International School (JIS) on Wednesday.

The monitoring team arrived at JIS in South Jakarta at 9:15 p.m. but security guards stopped them at the entrance, saying that the principal was having a meeting.

'€œSirs, I'€™m so sorry ['€¦] this is our procedure,'€ said a JIS security guard on Wednesday, as quoted by kompas.com.

The monitoring team, which included the directorate general'€™s legal division head Agus Pranoto, asked the security guard to pass on a letter from the Education and Culture Ministry to the school principal.

Another ministry staff member, Yohan Rubiantoro, said the team wanted to collect information for a meeting between PAUDNI and JIS later this afternoon.

'€œWe have been assigned to clarify, as well as to investigate, the alleged sexual assault case at the school. We will use the information we find as supporting material for a meeting at the ministry this afternoon,'€ said Yohan.

An alleged sexual assault in JIS was revealed on Monday.

A six-year-old student was reportedly gang raped by several members of the school'€™s outsourced cleaning staff on two separate occasions in the period of Feb. 20 to March 20, in toilets at the school. (idb/ebf)
