he Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) predicts the state losses resulting from alleged graft in the procurement of electronic identity (e-ID) cards in the 2011-2012 fiscal year will amount to Rp 1.12 trillion (US$96.3 million).
In the case, the KPK has named Sugiharto, director of citizens' administrative information management at the Home Ministry, a suspect.
'The estimated losses have been calculated from investigation results and amount to around Rp 1.12 trillion,' KPK spokesman Johan Budi said in Jakarta on Wednesday, as quoted by kompas.com.
The KPK has said it suspects the state losses were caused by markups in the price of the e-ID cards. The e-ID card program, which was worth a total Rp 6 trillion, was conducted in two periods, with more than Rp 2 trillion spent in 2011 and more than Rp 3 trillion in 2012.
Johan said Sugiharto, as an official helping to arrange the e-ID procurement, had breached the rules and abused his authority, contributing to the state losses.
As to the possible involvement of Home Minister Gamawan Fauzi in the case, Johan said the commission was still investigating.
As part of its investigation, the KPK searched three locations on Tuesday, one of which was the Gamawan's office at the Home Ministry in Jakarta. (idb/ebf)
