he Jakarta Public Works Agency started the construction on Thursday of another water reservoir in Cipedak, Jagakarsa, South Jakarta, which is expected to reduce flooding in several areas, including Kemang.
'This Brigif reservoir is expected to reduce floods in several areas like Kemang, Petogogan [South Jakarta]. The reservoir will hold runoff and prevent the water from flooding those areas,' Jakarta Governor Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo told reporters during an inspection of the site.
Land acquisition, however, remains an issue. Of the planned 10.3 hectares needed for the reservoir, only 6.6 hectares have been acquired.
'Negotiations are still ongoing,' agency head Manggas Rudy Siahaan said.
Ahmad, a local resident, said landowners had rejected the prices set by the city administration as too low.
'We were offered only Rp 600,000 [US$51.72] per square meter. We demand Rp 2 million in accordance with the market price,' he said.
Jokowi was upbeat that the negotiations could be completed within the next few weeks.
'We have to start the project anyway even though the negotiations are still ongoing, otherwise residents will be reluctant to sell their land, thinking that the project might not start soon,' he said.
