'We want to join a global initiative to conserve coral reefs. We have organized and implemented coral reef protection back home,' Brunei Industry and Primary Resources Minister Pehin Dato Yahya told a meeting held at the World Coral Reef Conference held in Manado on Friday.
Beforehand, Indonesia Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Sharif Cicip Sutardjo hinted that Brunei could become a new member.
Commenting on this, World Wildlife Fund (WWF) coral reef program director Wawan Ridwan praised Brunei's involvement in the regional effort to campaign for coral reef protection.
'This is the time for Brunei to show that it means business. Let's hope that soon coral reef protection will catch the world's attention,' he said.
The CTI has six founding member countries: Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Timor Leste, Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. Besides those countries, the WWF, the Nature Conservancy, AusAID and USAID have also joined the cause.
The CTI has a regional secretariat located in Manado and will soon be led by an executive director.
