T

he Jakarta administration plans to build sport centers in each of the city's subdistricts, especially in densely populated areas, to encourage people to take up sports.

The establishment of the sport centers in Jakarta was expected to help people to maintain their health, Jakarta Deputy Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama said on Monday.

"I also hope that the number of sports grounds in Jakarta will help young people channel their talent and expression through sport," Ahok said as quoted by Antara news agency.

Head of Jakarta's Youth and Sports Agency, Ratiyono, said the subdistrict sport centers would also function as local community areas.

To realize the plan, the Jakarta administration will buy land in densely populated residential areas.

"The funding for the land acquisition will be sourced from the 2014 revised provincial budget, but the exact amount required has not yet been determined," Ratiyono added.

The Jakarta administration will conduct a field survey before determining the exact amount of funding needed.

The Sunter Mas subdistrict in North Jakarta will be the first area to have a sports center established.

The total area allocated for the sports center in Sunter Mas will be around 2,000 square meters and the site will be equipped with volleyball, basketball and badminton courts. (hhr)
