he Agency for the Placement and Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers (BNP2TKI) has declared Jenggik Utara, a village in Montong Gading district, East Lombok regency, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), a productive migrant workers (TKI)-sending village for its efforts in putting the proceeds of remittances sent by workers abroad to productive use.
BNP2TKI head Gatot Abdullah Mansyur said the agency's program, called 'Productive TKI Village', was aimed at encouraging migrant workers to run their own businesses by tapping into local potentials in their respective areas.
'The Productive TKI Village will be promoted to become an industrial center for former migrant workers by promoting local potentials. It is hoped that they can become financially independent so that they no longer need to be migrant workers,' Gatot said on the sidelines of a ceremony held at Jenggik Utara village hall on Monday.
He added that the TKI village would be used to detect potential irregularities in the recruitment and placement of people wanting to work abroad.
NTB Governor Zainul Majdi and East Lombok Regent HM Ali bin Dachlan, as well as NTB and East Lombok local administration officials, attended the ceremony.
Jenggik Utara is the fourth village to be declared a Productive TKI Village in 2014 after Nglanggeran village in Patuk district, Gunung Kidul regency, Yogyakarta; Kelampaian Hulu and Kelampaian Tengah villages in Astambul district, Banjar regency, South Kalimantan; and Salakurai village in Bayongbong district in Garut regency, West Java.
