tate Secretary Sudi Silalahi says President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono will soon appoint a new minister to replace former religious affairs minister Suryadharma Ali.
He said the President needed at least two days to decide upon Suryadharma's replacement, as he had yet to receive the minister's official letter of resignation and he needed to examine reports on the investigation conducted by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), which had led his being named a suspect.
'The President will evaluate all the documentation and choose the right person to replace Suryadharma,' Sudi said in a press conference in Jakarta on Monday.
Suryadharma resigned from his post on Monday after the KPK named him a suspect last week in a graft case surrounding the 2012-2013 haj program.
Yudhoyono accepted his resignation during their meeting at the Bogor Palace on Monday. Vice President Boediono and Coordinating People's Welfare Minister Agung Laksono also attended the meeting.
Sudi said that during Monday's meeting, Suryadharma had provided details to the President of the investigation against him concerning his role in the alleged irregularities in the haj program. The former minister had insisted, however, that he was not involved in the case.
'The President has received reports about Suryadharma's case during the last two days and after examining them, he asked the minister to resign. Today [Monday], Suryadharma submitted his resignation and the President accepted it,' Sudi said.
The KPK named Suryadharma a suspect last Thursday. KPK spokesman Johan Budi said Suryadharma, as the official with the highest authority at the ministry, had been charged with malfeasance, enriching himself and others and corporate enrichment under articles 2 and 3 of the 2001 Corruption Law.
The campaign team for the presidential candidate pair, Gerindra Party chief patron Prabowo Subianto and his running mate, Hatta Rajasa, said it would decide whether to dismiss Suryadharma, who is chairman of the United Development Party (PPP) - one of the parties in the Gerindra-led coalition - as its adviser following his being named a graft suspect.
