Sharp eyes 15 percent share in large TV market

E

lectronics producer PT Sharp Electronics Indonesia (SEI) hopes to expand its large-screen television market to 15 percent by the end of the year, due in part to the expected surge in demand at the start of the soccer World Cup in Brazil later this month.

SEI'€™s audio visual product senior manager, Ardy, said in Jakarta on Wednesday that the company had prepared several new models in order to capture a greater share of the market for televisions with screens of more than 60 inches in size.

He said the company'€™s sales of large-screen TVs had increased lately, adding that it could offset the decline in the company'€™s overall TV sales.

'€œSharp currently holds a 7 percent share in the large-screen TV market in the country,'€ he said following the launch of the 80-inch Aquos Quattron Pro, Sharp'€™s new large-screen TV. He said Sharp would also soon be launching two other versions as part of the firm'€™s effort to meet its sales target.

The 80-inch Aquos TV has been available in stores since May, while the upcoming 60- and 70-inch versions will be rolled out in June and July. Prices range from Rp 60 million (US$5,040) to Rp 100 million.

Ardy said the company'€™s overall TV sales had declined in the first four months of this year amid fiercer completion in the country'€™s TV market. He said he hoped the increase in the sales of the large-screen TVs would offset the fall in sales of smaller-screen TVs.

According to Ardy, Sharp'€™s overall LED TV sales fell 18 percent year-on-year in January-April, while the sales of its large-screen LED TVs rose by 12.7 percent in the same period. Sharp has to compete with similar products from other major producers including Panasonic, Samsung and Sony in order to gain a stronger foothold in the country'€™s large-screen TV market.

SEI'€™s products general manager, Herdiana Anita Pisceria, said that despite the relatively low demand in the overall LED TV market, she remained optimistic that the World Cup finals and the upcoming Idul Fitri holiday would boost the company'€™s sales.

'€œOur overall LED TV sales have been hit hard by economic conditions, such as the strong dollar, but by tapping into the large-screen market, we hope to increase our earnings,'€ she said on Wednesday.

She said that Sharp expected 10 percent growth in large-screen TV sales this year, lower than the company'€™s initial projection. Previously, the company predicted 30 to 40 percent growth but reviewed their target due to the drop in overall market demand in the first four months this year. (dyl)
