T

he Yogyakarta-based Gadjah Mada University (UGM) established an environmental club known as Waste Action Club (UWAC) on Tuesday, which will focus on the management and treatment of industrial waste.

The launching ceremony on June 13 overseen by the dean of the UGM School of Biology, Suwarno Hadisusanto, was marked by a seminar on the environmental management in oil and gas business activities.

Suwarno stressed that the group was expected to raise awareness about the importance of environmental issues.

Speaking at the seminar, Indra Maizir of PT Shell Indonesia called on the students to seriously learn about environmental management because this country would face tougher environmental problems with increased industrial growth.

Meanwhile, Andhika Puspito Nugroho, a professor at the UGM School of Biology, stressed the importance of knowing about the subject.

'€œEnvironmental management is very important to understand by students. I hope students know how the industry works so that they know what environmental management is, particularly in the oil and gas industry, which is very influential to the economy,'€ said Andhika.
