wo Jakarta International School (JIS) teaching staff members who were recently named suspects in relation to allegations of sexual assault against three kindergarten pupils are currently undergoing physical and psychological examinations, the Jakarta Police said on Tuesday.
"The two JIS teachers who have been named suspects for allegedly assaulting several students are currently undergoing a physical examination," Jakarta Police chief detective Sr. Comr. Heru Pranoto said at the Jakarta Police headquarters, as reported by Antara news agency.
Suspects Neil Bantleman and Ferdinand Tijong will also undergo a psychological exam and several other examinations.
On Monday, investigators decided to detain Bantleman and Ferdinand to ensure that neither of the suspects tried to eliminate evidence or to flee.
If convicted, both suspects could face 15 years' imprisonment.
Jakarta Police spokesperson Sr. Comr. Rikwanto added that the police had also proposed imposing travel bans on witnesses connected to the case, to prevent them from leaving the country.
Meanwhile, Elsa Donohue, the principal of the JIS kindergarten and elementary school, remains a witness in the case even though the mother of one of the victims filed a police report claiming that her son had been drugged by Donohue prior to being sexually assaulted.
After the mother's report, Donohue, Bantleman and Ferdinand filed a police report accusing her of having defamed them.
They said the mother had disseminated messages to other parents and JIS staff members, baselessly branding them as pedophiles. (fss)
