Caretaker Sugito was the first to notice the fire and said it started around 1:30 a.m.
Five fire trucks were deployed to fight the flames. Although there were no victims, some of the worshiping paraphernalia was destroyed.
The Central Java Police deployed personnel from their forensic laboratories to investigate the incident.
"We took two ceiling fans from the temple and collected a sack of ash. We also collected some installation cable," forensic team leader Adj. Sr. Comr Rini Pujiastuti said, adding that the results would take 10 days.
The Liong Hok Bio Temple was opened in 1864. (fss/dic)
