130,000 travelers get free '€˜mudik'€™ services, says minister

ransportation Minister EE Mangindaan says that thanks to free travel services provided by companies operating in Jakarta, more city residents have been given the opportunity to return to travel home, or mudik, for Idul Fitri this year.

Citing data, he said around 130,000 people obtained free tickets home this year'€™s holiday season.

Mangindaan encouraged companies in Jakarta to provide more free travel services for holiday revelers.

'€œFree mudik services can accommodate those who don'€™t have private vehicles,'€ said Mangindaan as quoted by tribunnews.com.

He was speaking on the sidelines of the dispatching of holiday travelers using the 2014 Idul Fitri free mudik service provided by giant retailer Carrefour Indonesia in Jakarta on Wednesday.

The minister further said that such free services could decrease the number of people traveling on the roads in their own vehicles.

'€œIf most travelers could depart several days before Idul Fitri, there would be less traffic congestion during the peak of holiday travel. We hope more companies, not only Carrefour, can provide more free mudik services,'€ said Mangindaan.

The Transportation Ministry predicts that 19.29 million people will travel to their hometowns during this year'€™s Idul Fitri holidays, up by 3.83 percent from 18.58 million people in 2013. (fss/ebf)
