KPK questions PPP lawmaker for haj case

T

he Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) questioned on Thursday the deputy chair of House of Representatives Commission IX, Irgan Chairul Mahfiz, as a witness in relation to the alleged corruption in the Religious Affairs Ministry's haj management in 2012-2013.

"The witness is being questioned in relation to suspect [former religious affairs minister] Suryadharma Ali's case," KPK media relations head Priharsa Nugraha said in Jakarta, as quoted by Antara news agency.

Although Irgan was originally due to be questioned on Monday, the United Development Party (PPP) lawmaker was called in again because the first summons letter did not reach him on time, Priharsa said.

Irgan is one of 35 people who enjoyed a free haj pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia together with Suryadharma.

The KPK has already questioned seven other individuals who were part of the haj entourage, including Suryadharma's wife, Wardhatul Asriah, and son-in-law Rendhika Deniardy Harsono.

After Irgan, the KPK plans to question ministerial bodyguards Eko Widyantoro and Iwan Setiawan, as well as Suryadharma's administrative staffer, Rosandi.

The KPK is also investigating the ministry's former director general for the haj and umrah (minor pilgrimage), Anggito Abimanyu, in relation to the case.

On May 22, the KPK named Suryadharma a suspect in the graft case costing Rp 1 trillion (US$84.86 million). He stands to be charged under Article 2, Paragraph 1 and/or Article 3 of Law No. 31/1999 on corruption.

Suryadharma, who is also chairman of the PPP, has been urged by his party's elite to resign from his position due to being implicated in the case. (fss)
